A crown is usually the better choice for a tooth with major decay, a large filling, a fracture or significant structural damage. Some people combine treatments as part of a smile makeover.
Are veneers right for you?
Veneers suit people who want to improve specific features of their smile and have healthy teeth and gums. Your dentist will check:
- Teeth and gums, tooth wear and your bite
- Existing fillings, crowns and other dental work
- Oral hygiene
- Your cosmetic goals and expectations

The veneer process
- Smile consultation. You tell us what you’d like to change. Cosmetic dentistry should follow your goals, not a template.
- Dental exam. We check your teeth, gums, bite and existing dental work. Underlying problems are addressed first if needed.
- Treatment planning. We plan tooth colour, shape, proportions, number of teeth, smile symmetry, your bite and the result you want.
- Design. Your veneers are custom designed to fit the chosen teeth and complement your smile.
- Preparation. Depending on your plan, a small amount of enamel may be removed before the veneers are bonded. Your dentist explains what’s needed for you.
- Placement. The veneers are carefully bonded, and we check fit, appearance and bite.
Do veneers look natural?
They can be designed to closely resemble natural teeth. A natural look depends on shape, proportions, colour, translucency, smile design, gum appearance, how many teeth are treated and how the veneers relate to your other teeth. Natural doesn’t mean extremely white or perfectly identical. Your plan should fit your face, your existing teeth and your preferences.
How many veneers do you need?
There’s no standard number. Some people treat one or two teeth, while others treat several visible teeth. Your dentist will discuss which teeth could benefit.
Before you decide: what to know
- Preparation is often irreversible. Veneer treatment may involve altering the natural tooth surface. Ask your dentist exactly what preparation your case needs before you proceed.
- Veneers can’t be whitened later the way natural teeth can. If you want whitening too, decide on your final colour first and whiten before veneers.
- Existing dental work may not match. Natural teeth and restorations respond differently to cosmetic treatment.
- They aren’t permanent for life. A veneer may eventually need repair or replacement.
- Grinding matters. If you grind or clench, tell your dentist first. Excessive forces can damage veneers. A custom night guard may be recommended.
Caring for veneers
The teeth under veneers can still get cavities, and your gums can still develop disease.
- Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth daily
- Keep regular exams and hygiene visits
- Don’t use your teeth to open packages or bite hard objects such as ice, pens or fingernails
- Wear a night guard if recommended
Eating: Most people can eat normally with veneers, but avoid biting very hard objects.
How long do they last? It varies with oral hygiene, bite forces, grinding, habits, regular dental care and the condition of the teeth underneath. Veneers aren’t indestructible.
If a veneer chips, cracks or comes off
Don’t try to reattach it permanently yourself. Keep the veneer and call us at (604) 585-2345 so we can check it and the tooth underneath. We’ll tell you whether it can be repaired or needs replacing. If the tooth is painful, see dental emergencies. For facial swelling with fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call 911.

Are veneers good for stained teeth?
They can be considered when certain stains don’t respond well to whitening, or when you want to change other features too. If colour is your only concern, whitening is usually the more conservative option.
Do veneers look like real teeth?
They can be customized to look natural. Shape, colour, proportions and translucency all contribute.
Can veneers fix small gaps?
Sometimes, for selected teeth. If the underlying problem is tooth position, orthodontic treatment may be more appropriate.
Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
They may improve the look of mildly irregular teeth but they don’t move teeth. Invisalign may be considered for alignment problems.
Can I get veneers if I have cavities?
Cavities should generally be treated before cosmetic veneer treatment. Your dentist will tell you whether anything needs to be done first.
Can I get veneers if I grind my teeth?

Can I whiten porcelain veneers?
Veneers don’t whiten the way natural teeth do. If you want both, decide your final colour with your dentist first.
